He replied, "It is not a stūpa pole (chagan). Gan refers to a long ridge of land; ridges are called gan, and the stūpa was close beside the long ridge. Does the Book of Documents not say, 'encompassing Gan and Yue'? The land of Yue has many long ridges. The stūpa in Mao County by the sea is also an ancient stūpa of King Aśoka. The smaller stūpa is one from the first Buddha of the Bhadrakalpa; it contains the arm bone of Kāśyapa Buddha, which cannot be seen by mortals. An arhat, about to depart for the Cakravaḍa mountains, left behind the small stūpa, which welled up from the earth to open up mundane blessings. That stūpa has powerful benevolent spirits who constantly manifest as two fish. The eel-fish in the well is a spirit that protects the stūpa. Beside it are the Buddha's footprints on stone, which are said to be the places trodden by the three previous Buddhas. In antiquity during the Zhou, many people dwelt in this land, and therefore this stūpa was placed [here]."
