East of the monastery's Great Courtyard, to the left of the great avenue, is the Courtyard for Serving the Saṅgha. The avenue is three li wide, and in its midst are forest trees in eighteen rows, alternating between flowers and fruits. Two canals on the east and west flow swiftly and clearly to the north. The canal on the west side emerges eastward from the hidden conduit of the Great Courtyard and flows north. This great avenue is pristine and clean; carriages and horses do not travel on it. To the north and south of the avenue, on the left and right, there is set a great stone spirit, fashioned by the Earth Deity Dṛḍhā. Holding halberds in their hands and treading on demons beneath their feet, their fierce and resolute majesty cannot be gazed upon directly. When travelers pass by, they lower their eyes and quicken their steps.
