2.72

又曰：「至於乾封之際，天神合沓，或寫《祇洹圖經》、《付囑儀》等，且非寓言於鬼神乎？君不見《十誦律》中諸此丘尚揚言：『目連犯妄。』佛言：『目連隨心想說無罪。』佛世猶爾，像季嫉賢，斯何足怪也？」

It also says: 'Coming to the Qianfeng era (666–668 CE), heavenly spirits gathered in crowds; they transcribed the Illustrated Scripture on the Jetavana, Ritual for the Transmission of the Entrustment, and the like. Could this not be allegorical speech concerning ghosts and spirits? Have you not seen in the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya that the bhikṣus even proclaimed aloud: "Maudgalyāyana has committed a falsehood"? The Buddha said: "Maudgalyāyana spoke in accordance with the conceptions of his mind, and is without guilt." Even in the Buddha's lifetime it was thus; in the final era of the semblance Dharma, people envy the worthy—how is this worthy of being wondered at?'
