Next, to the north of the small lane, is a courtyard called the Courtyard of the Bodhisattva Twelvefold Dependent Origination. Its gate faces the southern lane, and its halls and trees are adorned. Inside there is no bell, but there is a golden monkey-like creature shaped like a small ape. When the time arrives, it makes a sound like a celestial konghou; expounded in its sound are the Bodhisattva Four Truths, the twelvefold dependent origination, and impermanence, suffering, and emptiness, and its sound fills the city of Śrāvastī. If one wishes it to cease, one restrains its mouth with an object, and its sound immediately ceases. This monkey-like creature was made by the Nāgarāja Manasvin. When the Tathāgata was about to enter nirvāṇa, blood gushed forth from the monkey's eyes, and it proclaimed aloud: 'How wondrous is the World-Honoured One! After three months, he shall enter nirvāṇa!' It was the first to announce this. When faithful humans and devas heard it, they were all overcome with grief and lamentation.
