Next, the great courtyard to the north is named the Courtyard of the Buddha Washing Robes. A single gate opens to the south. In the center is a great hall, with surrounding chambers in three circuits. The square stone terraces and round ponds were created by the devas. Flowering groves are planted intertwined, filled with pure fragrance. When the Buddha delights in washing robes, devas and humans gather together, and Śakra Devānām Indra presents a suite of heavenly music. When the Buddha is not present, the sounds of the instruments speak only of impermanence, suffering, and emptiness. If the Buddha is present, the Gandharva king comes in person to drum, playing music throughout the six periods of the day. Initially it never ceased, but after the Buddha entered extinction, the Sāgara Nāgarāja took it into his palace to make offerings to the scriptures. This music has more than three thousand instruments, which were crafted by a Garuḍa king.
