Next, the third courtyard to the north is named the Sick Quarter for the Buddha. Its gates open as described above. Halls and buildings are arranged all around, with two rows of flowering trees. Jīvaka and Ānanda attend and nurse here. Mahābrahmā presented eight suites of music, each instrument having sixteen varieties, all fashioned of gold, silver, and the seven treasures. When the Buddha manifests illness for the sake of sentient beings, these instruments produce tones to cheer and comfort him. When the Buddha Tathāgata hears the tones, his illness is immediately cured. If his illness is not cured, the musical tones perform such melodies as 'The Six Pāramitās' and 'The Bases of Spiritual Power.' The sound pervades the trichiliocosm; if those on the first bhūmi or the ten abodes manifest illness, they are cured upon hearing the sounds. After the Tathāgata entered extinction, they remained in the courtyard for sixteen years; beyond this time, Brahmā retrieved them, and they are now in the form realm.
