Second, explaining bodily protection [of the robes]. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya states: "Guard the three robes as if they were your own skin, and the bowl as if it were your eyes. When wearing the great robe, one must not carry wood, stones, earth, or grass. Various chores such as sweeping the ground must not be done [while wearing it]." The Juezheng erbu lü lun states: "When wearing the great robe to enter a village, if one sees one's master-monk, a senior monk, or other distinct individuals, one must not make prostrations to them. (One may prostrate to the Buddha and to the saṅgha as a whole.)" The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya states: "Wherever you go, be accompanied by your robes and bowl, having no lingering attachments, just like a flying bird. If one enters a village without carrying the three robes, one commits an offense." The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "One should regard [the robes] as if they were a stūpa." An ancestral master said: "All the Vinaya traditions uniformly prescribe keeping them on one's person. Those today who merely guard against spending the night [apart from them] do not conform to the teachings."
