3. The tree boundary; (at the very minimum, down to equal to a person's height, sufficient to shade someone sitting cross-legged; this has five distinctions:) First, a solitary tree; (taking the area covered by the shadow at midday, where rain does not reach.) Second, a contiguous large forest; (the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya states: "One krośa," which is two li, six hundred paces.) Third, a small grove of four trees; (the Samantapāsādikā states: "Fourteen hastas," calculated as two zhang, five chi, two cun.) Fourth, a vine trellis; (grapevines, gourds, melons, and the like. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "Take twenty-five hastas on each of the four sides," calculated as four zhang, five chi, meaning measured outward from the person's body, not from outside the trellis.) Fifth, explaining above and below; (if the robe is beneath the tree and the body is above, the robe is forfeited. If the robe is above and the body is below, it is not forfeited, because there is the possibility of it falling down.)
