三、明體者。《律》云：「大要有二，泥及鐵也。」《五分律》中：「用木鉢，犯偷蘭罪。」《僧祇》云：「是外道標故，又受垢膩故。」《祖師》云：「今世中有夾紵、漆油等鉢，竝是非法，義須毀之。」

Third, explaining its substance. The Vinaya says: "In general there are two kinds: clay and iron." In the Pañcavargika-vinaya: "Using a wooden bowl constitutes a sthūlātyaya offence." The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya says: "Because it is a mark of non-Buddhists, and also because it absorbs grime and grease." The Patriarch says: "In the world today there are bowls made of layered hemp, lacquer, and oil; these are all improper, and according to principle must be destroyed."
