四、明色者。《四分》：「應熏作黑色、赤色。」《僧祇》：「熏作孔雀咽色、鴿色者，如法。」《善見》：「鐵鉢五熏，土鉢二熏。」《律》中：「聽作熏鉢鑪」等。（此間多用竹烟，色則易上。）

Fourth, explaining the colour. The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya: "It should be smoked to become black or red." The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: "To smoke it to the colour of a peacock's throat or the colour of a dove is in accordance with the Dharma." The Samantapāsādikā: "An iron bowl is smoked five times; an earthen bowl is smoked twice." In the Vinaya: "One is permitted to make a bowl-smoking furnace," and so forth. (In this region bamboo smoke is mostly used, as the colour takes easily.)
