At that time, the Bhagavat emitted from the white ūrṇā between his eyebrows a light that illuminated all sentient beings in the six destinies. Then the bodhisattva Faith-Appearance, out of pity and concern for all sentient beings, arose from his seat, went before the Buddha, knelt with his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, and addressed the Buddha, saying: 'Bhagavat! There are now sentient beings whose bodies are chopped and pounded by hell wardens, cleaved from their feet up to their crowns; after they have been cleaved, an adroit wind blows upon them to revive them, and they are cleaved again, undergoing this painful retribution without rest. By what sin is this caused?' The Buddha said: 'In their past lives, these sentient beings did not believe in the Three Honoured Ones, did not know how to make offerings, were unfilial to their parents, harbored evil and rebellious intentions, or were butchers and executioners who cleaved and harmed sentient beings. Due to these causes and conditions, they receive this retribution.'
