'Furthermore, there are sentient beings whose bodies are numb and paralyzed, their eyebrows and beards falling out, their whole bodies festering and rotting, who roost where birds nest and deer lodge, cut off from human tracks, abandoned by their kin, and whom people dislike seeing. Such an evil retribution is called leprosy. By what causes and conditions do they incur this retribution?' The Buddha said: 'In their past lives, they did not believe in the Three Honoured Ones, were unfilial to their parents, destroyed stūpas and ruined monasteries, stripped and plundered religious practitioners, attacked and shot at sages and worthies, harmed teachers and elders, were constantly ungrateful, betrayed kindness and forgot righteousness, continually behaved like dogs, defiled what was venerated, made no distinction between close kin and strangers, and had no sense of shame. Due to these causes and conditions, they receive this retribution.'
