"There are sentient beings constantly in cauldrons, where the ox-headed Apāṅga holds iron forks, impaling them into the cauldrons to boil until they dissolve, then blowing them back to life only to boil them again. What sin has caused this?" The Buddha said: "In former lives, they slaughtered living beings, dousing them with boiling water and plucking their hair in immeasurable numbers. Due to this evil karma, they receive this retribution of sin."
