"There are sentient beings constantly upon mountains of knives and trees of swords; whatever they grasp immediately cuts them, severing and breaking their limbs and joints, with agonizing, bitter pain that is unbearable. What sin has caused this?" The Buddha said: "In former lives, slaughtering was their trade: boiling and slaughtering sentient beings, butchering, carving, flaying, and tearing them apart, separating bones from flesh, scattering heads and feet, hanging them on high racks to weigh and sell, or hanging them up alive in unbearable pain. Due to this evil karma, they receive this retribution of sin."
