Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor! Once again with utmost sincerity, make a prostration with the five limbs touching the ground, on behalf of all inconceivable dragon kings throughout the ten directions, exhausting the reaches of space: the Miaohua Dragon King, the Touhuati Dragon King, the dragon kings of the five directions, the celestial dragon kings, the terrestrial dragon kings, the mountain dragon kings, the ocean dragon kings, the sun palace dragon kings, the moon palace dragon kings, the star palace dragon kings, the dragon kings of the seasons and years, the dragon kings of the blue sea, the dragon kings that protect physical life, the dragon kings that protect sentient beings; and furthermore, throughout the ten directions, whether within or without, near or far, in the east, west, south, north, the four intermediate directions, above, or below, throughout the Dharma realm of space, who possess great supernormal powers and great majestic virtue—on behalf of all such dragon kings, all dragon spirits, and each of their retinues, take refuge in and pay homage to the great, compassionate father of all worlds:

8.12

8.13

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor! 8.18

Seventh: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of the Human Realm

8.19

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! Together we have already paid homage to the Buddhas on behalf of the devas, immortals, and the eight classes of nāgas and spirits. Next, we should pay homage to the Buddhas on behalf of all human rulers of the human realm to repay their kindness, and also on behalf of parents, teachers, elders, and all the people. Why is this? If there were no sovereign, all sentient beings would have nothing to rely upon. It is due to the great sovereign that all can dwell [in safety], walk upon the sovereign's land, and drink the sovereign's water; other benefits cannot be recounted in full. The assembly should each arouse a mind to repay this kindness. A sūtra says: 'If one can endure hardship during the six intervals of a day and night in order to benefit others and repay kindness, one should arouse such a mind and practice compassion and loving-kindness.' Through the power of these vows, we repay the kindness of the ruler and repay the kindness of donors. Furthermore, one should remember to practice the Way to repay the kindness of loving upbringing by one's parents; one should also practice the Way to repay the kindness of loving instruction by one's teachers and elders; and next, one should direct one's mind to remember the kindness of the Tathāgata. If one can constantly be mindful [of this] with utmost sincerity without interruption, such people will swiftly enter the Way.

8.20

Part One: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of the Sovereign

8.21

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! The loving-kindness and grace of the Buddhas, the Great Sages, in instructing and guiding us is so earnest that we must know kindness and repay kindness. Today we rely upon the sovereign, who in this final age has revived and manifested the Buddha-Dharma, making various offerings without begrudging wealth and treasures, so that ministers and commoners throughout the realm turn to him in allegiance. Furthermore, he enables renunciants to dwell in peace and practice the Way, without hindrance whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, not embroiling them in worldly affairs but encouraging them only in goodness, wishing that we all swiftly transcend birth and death, expound measureless Dharma-doors, and open the upright path of humans and devas. Since the sovereign possesses such benevolence and virtue, how could each person not bow in worship to repay his kindness? Together, with utmost sincerity and an equal sense of poignant urgency, let us take refuge on behalf of the sovereign in the Great Compassionate Father of the World.

8.25

May the sacred person of the present Emperor (formerly said: 'Emperor of the Great Liang') enjoy health and peace, and his heavenly majesty extend far and wide; may the imperial foundation be forever secure, and his wisdom-life be boundless; may his benevolence moisten without limit, and all conscious beings turn their hearts [to him]; may his bodhisattva transformation flourish, and devas and humans praise and revere him; may his four immeasurables and six pāramitās brighten day and night; may his four unhindered eloquence and delight in speaking be inexhaustible; may he attain the eight masteries and possess the six supernormal powers; may his samādhis and dhāraṇīs appear at a thought; may his compassion and loving-kindness immediately reach the world, and his grace permeate the six destinies; and may his myriad practices soon be perfected, swiftly ascending to samyaksambodhi.

8.26

Part Two: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of the Various Princes

8.27

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! Once again, with utmost sincerity and five limbs touching the ground, on behalf of:

8.28

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, the various princes of the enfeoffed lands (formerly said: 'the various princes of Linchuan'), and their respective retinues, let us take refuge in the Great Compassionate Father of the World.

8.30

Namo Anantakāya Bodhisattva. / Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

8.31

We also take refuge in all the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and the entirety of space. We pray that by the power of compassion and loving-kindness you will together extend shelter and protection, and pray that:

8.32

May His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, the various princes of the enfeoffed lands, and their respective retinues enjoy peace and joy in body and mind, with wondrous calculations without end; may they practice the Mahāyāna path and enter the Buddha's wisdom; may they put on the four great vows, abandoning none; may the four immeasurables and six pāramitās constantly be manifest; may the six supernormal powers and three knowledges allow them to understand faculties and natures well; may they possess the two adornments, with sovereignty in spiritual powers; and may they practice the Tathāgata's compassion and loving-kindness, gathering and transforming the four modes of birth.

8.33

Part Three: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of Parents

8.34

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! Next, we should also throw our five limbs to the ground on behalf of our parents' kindness in nurturing and raising us. Carrying us in their arms and suckling us, their love and esteem were deep. They would rather endanger their own bodies than fail to establish their children safely. When we grew up, they instructed us in benevolence and etiquette, washed their hands to seek teachers, wishing that we master the scriptures and their meanings, never forgetting for a moment the hope that we would equal the ranks of men. Whatever provisions were needed, they did not begrudge the family's treasures. Thinking of us, their worries tied them into knots, sometimes even making them ill; lying down, their mats were uneasy, constantly missing their children. The weight of their kindness under heaven is truly without equal in the world. Therefore, the Buddha said: 'Under heaven, no kindness surpasses that of parents.' For those who have renounced the family, if they have not yet attained the Way, let them only apply themselves diligently to their studies and never abandon doing good; by accumulating virtue unceasingly, they will certainly be able to repay their kindness. Together, with utmost sincerity and an equal sense of poignant urgency, with our five limbs touching the ground, let each on behalf of the parents who gave us birth through lives, and all relations and kin through successive kalpas since we first possessed a conscious spirit down to today, take refuge in the Great Compassionate Father of the World.

8.35

Namo Maitreya Buddha. / Namo Śākyamuni Buddha. / Namo Jñānarāśi Buddha. / Namo Damaka Buddha. / Namo Tathārāja Buddha. / Namo Kusumalakṣaṇa Buddha. / Namo Rāhula Buddha. / Namo Mahābhaiṣajya Buddha. / Namo Nakṣatrarāja Buddha. / Namo Kusumabhūpa Buddha. / Namo Guṇahasta Buddha. / Namo Takṣaka Buddha. / Namo Prasṛtarāja Buddha. / Namo Sūryaprabha Buddha. / Namo Dharmākara Buddha. / Namo Mañjughoṣa Buddha. / Namo Guṇeśvara Buddha. / Namo Vajrasaṃgha Buddha. / Namo Jñānamūrdhan Buddha. / Namo Susthita Buddha. / Namo Manocārin Buddha. / Namo Brahmaghoṣa Buddha. / Namo Siṃha Buddha. / Namo Meghaghoṣa Buddha. / Namo Pratibhānalakṣaṇa Buddha. / Namo Kṣema Buddha. / Namo Jñānaskandha Buddha. / Namo Anantakāya Bodhisattva. / Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

8.36

We also take refuge in all the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and the entirety of space.

8.37

We pray that by the power of compassion and loving-kindness you will together gather and receive them. May our parents, relatives, and respective kin, from this day forth until they reach bodhi, have all their karmic obstacles eliminated, all their manifold sufferings completely liberated, and their habitual propensities and afflictions forever purified; may they forever depart the four destinies and be reborn with sovereignty, attend upon the Buddhas in person and receive prediction in their presence; may the four immeasurable minds and six pāramitās never leave their practice; may the four unhindered knowledges and six supernormal powers be at their wish and sovereign; may they attain the Buddha's ten powers, adorn their bodies with marks and signs, sit together in the bodhimaṇḍa, and achieve equal and right awakening.

8.38

Part Four: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of Deceased Parents

8.39

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! If among us there are those whose parents passed away when they were young, it is difficult to meet them again across the vastness of myriad kalpas; having not yet attained the divine eye and the clear knowledge of life and death, we do not know what realm our parents' consciousness has been reborn into after casting off their retribution. We must only strive to produce merits and virtues to pursue them and repay their kindness; if one does good without ceasing, when the effort succeeds, the result will surely arrive. A sūtra says: 'To create merit for the deceased is like sending provisions to someone far away. If they have been reborn as humans or devas, it increases their merits. If they are in the three wretched paths or in the eight difficulties, it swiftly brings them liberation.' If in their birth they encounter a Buddha and receive the teaching of the true Dharma, they will forever leave behind manifold sufferings, having all worries and fears eradicated; parents and kin of seven past generations and across successive kalpas, along with sentient beings of the ten directions, will all attain liberation together. This is the highest repayment of kindness through utmost compassion and utmost filial piety by the wise. Today, if any among us have deceased parents, we should weep with grief, yearning and lamenting with wailing and sorrowful cries, and on behalf of deceased parents and kin across successive kalpas, throw our five limbs to the ground to take refuge in the Great Compassionate Father of the World.

8.40

Namo Maitreya Buddha. / Namo Śākyamuni Buddha. / Namo Brahmarāja Buddha. / Namo Mahāgavāmpati Buddha. / Namo Rītāmu Buddha. / Namo Nāgaguṇa Buddha. / Namo Ratnalakṣaṇa Buddha. / Namo Vyūha Buddha. / Namo Animajjaghoṣa Buddha. / Namo Kusumadhara Buddha. / Namo Ghoṣaprāpta Buddha. / Namo Siṃha Buddha. / Namo Alaṅkāravāc Buddha. / Namo Śūramati Buddha. / Namo Kusumasañcaya Buddha. / Namo Kusumavikāsa Buddha. / Namo Balacārin Buddha. / Namo Guṇasañcaya Buddha. / Namo Uttamarūpa Buddha. / Namo Prabhāsa Buddha. / Namo Candradīpa Buddha. / Namo Tejorāja Buddha. / Namo Bodhirāja Buddha. / Namo Ananta Buddha. / Namo Bodhicakṣus Buddha. / Namo Pūrṇakāya Buddha. / Namo Jñānaviṣaya Buddha.

8.41

Namo Anantakāya Bodhisattva. / Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

8.42

We also take refuge in all the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and the entirety of space.

8.43

We pray that by the power of compassion and loving-kindness you will rescue, protect, and deliver them. May each member of the assembly's deceased parents and relatives across successive kalpas, from this day forth until they reach the bodhimaṇḍa, have all conditions of guilt dissolved and extinguished, all fruits of suffering forever removed, and their afflictions and bonds completely purified; may they cut off the conditions of the three obstacles and be free of the five terrors; may they practice the bodhisattva path and broadly transform all; may they cleanse their minds with the eight liberations and envelop all beings with the four great vows; may they face the Compassionate Countenance in person and receive the wondrous instructions; without rising from their original seat, may they exhaust all outflows, roam freely at will throughout all Buddha-lands, and soon fulfill their practices and vows, swiftly attaining samyaksambodhi.

8.44

Part Five: Paying Homage to the Buddhas on Behalf of Teachers and Elders

8.45

Today, members of the assembly sharing this karmic endeavor in the bodhimaṇḍa! Together we have already paid homage to the Buddhas on behalf of our parents and relatives; next, we should again remember the benevolence and virtue of teachers and elders and devoutly pay homage to the Buddhas. Why is this? Though parents give birth to and raise us, they cannot cause us to swiftly leave the evil destinies. Our teachers and elders have measureless kindness toward us, using great compassion to encourage and instruct us, constantly causing us to cultivate goodness, wishing that we transcend birth and death to reach the other shore, benefiting us in every matter so that we may see the Buddha, eradicate the bonds of affliction, and forever abide in the unconditioned. Who could fully repay such supreme virtue? Even if one were to practice the Way for one's whole life, that would merely be of benefit to oneself and not the repayment of the teacher's kindness. Therefore, the Buddha said: 'Among kalyāṇamitras, none surpasses a teacher or elder; they can both save themselves and also save others.' Today we have received permission to leave household life and have received the full precepts; such heavy kindness was obtained from our teachers and elders. How could each of us not remember this kindness? Together, with utmost sincerity and an equal sense of poignant urgency, casting our five limbs to the ground, on behalf of our upādhyāyas, ācāryas, fellow-platform certifying witnesses, and elder, middle, and junior monks, along with their respective retinues, let us take refuge in the Great Compassionate Father of the World.

8.46

Namo Maitreya Buddha. Namo Śākyamuni Buddha. Namo Anuttara Buddha. Namo Śītalāvabhāsa Buddha. Namo Matiguṇa Buddha. Namo Mañjughoṣa Buddha. Namo Pariṇāyaka Buddha. Namo Asaṅgagarbha Buddha. 8.47

Namo Anantakāya Bodhisattva. Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

8.48

And again we take refuge in all the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and the entirety of space, such as these.

8.49

May they together extend their acceptance through the power of compassion and loving-kindness. We pray that our preceptors, ācāryas, venerable witnesses of the same platform, senior, middle, and junior seat-holders, each together with their dependents, from this day forth until they sit in the bodhimaṇḍa, may have all their sinful obstacles purified, all their sufferings liberated, and all their afflictions severed and eradicated; that they may be reborn in the pure lands of the buddhas as they wish; that their bodhi practices and vows may all be completely fulfilled; that their giving of wealth may be inexhaustible, their giving of Dharma inexhaustible, their merits inexhaustible, their peace and joy inexhaustible, their lifespans inexhaustible, and their wisdom inexhaustible; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās may constantly be present before them; that the four unhindered knowledges and the six supernatural powers may be freely exercised at will; and that, abiding in the Śūraṅgama Samādhi, they may attain the vajra-body, not abandoning their fundamental vows to return and rescue sentient beings.

8.50

We pray that all deceased bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, śikṣamāṇās, śrāmaṇeras, and śrāmaṇerikās, each together with their dependents, and also pray that all deceased upāsakas and upāsikās, each together with their dependents, if they have sufferings in the hell destiny, may immediately attain liberation today; if they have sufferings in the animal destiny, may immediately attain liberation today; if they have sufferings in the destiny of spirits and ghosts, may immediately attain liberation today; that they may depart from the lands of the eight difficulties and receive birth among the eight blessings; that they may forever leave behind the evil destinies and constantly be born in pure lands; that their giving of wealth may be inexhaustible, their giving of Dharma inexhaustible, their merits inexhaustible, their peace and joy inexhaustible, their lifespans inexhaustible, and their wisdom inexhaustible; that the four immeasurable minds and the six pāramitās may constantly be present before them; that the four unhindered knowledges and the six supernatural powers may be freely exercised at will; that they may constantly behold the buddhas and hear the Dharma, practicing the bodhisattva path with vigorous courage without rest or cease, proceeding even in their cultivation to attain anuttarā samyaksambodhi, and broadly deliver and liberate all sentient beings.
