The mind does not arise in isolation; it must depend on conditions to arise. The sense faculty of the mind is the cause, mental objects are the conditions, and the mind that arises is the dharma produced. These sense faculties and objects, the capable and the produced, shift through three phases, covertly arising and covertly ceasing, newly born and newly perished moment by moment, never abiding for a single thought-moment, flashing like lightning, rushing like a torrential stream. Form is a bubble, feeling is foam, perception is a mirage, mental formations are a phantom city, and consciousness is an illusion. All circumstantial rewards—lands, fields, residences, wives, children, and possessions—are lost in a single thought-moment, abruptly existing and suddenly vanishing. The three realms are impermanent, a basket of sheer suffering; the four mountains close in with nowhere to flee. One must only concentrate the mind on morality, meditation, and wisdom, piercing delusion vertically, cutting across the ocean of death horizontally, and transcending the stream of existence.
