1.131

經言：「我昔與汝等不見四真諦，是故久迴轉。」火宅如此，云何耽湎縱逸嬉戲？是故慈悲起四弘誓，拔苦與樂。如釋迦之見耕墾，似彌勒之觀毀臺，即其義也。以明了四諦，故非九縛；起四弘誓，故非一脫。是為非縛非脫發真正菩提心，顯是義明矣。

A sūtra says: 'Formerly, because you and I did not see the four true truths, we circled in transmigration for so long.' In a burning house such as this, how could one indulge in heedlessness and playful sport? Therefore, out of loving-kindness and compassion, one gives rise to the four universal vows to eradicate suffering and bestow happiness. This is just like Śākyamuni witnessing the plowing of the fields, or Maitreya observing the collapse of the tower. Because one clearly comprehends the four truths, it is not the nine bondages; because one raises the four universal vows, it is not the single liberation. This is generating the true aspiration for bodhi that is neither bondage nor liberation, and the meaning of revealing the correct is made clear.
