The Ratnarāśi-sūtra says: ‘If a bhikṣu does not cultivate the bhikṣu Dharma, in the great trichiliocosm there is not even a place for him to spit, much less receive offerings from others.’ Sixty bhikṣus wept bitterly and said to the Buddha: ‘We would rather die than receive offerings from others.’ The Buddha said: ‘You have aroused a mind of shame and conscience—excellent, excellent!’ A bhikṣu said to the Buddha: ‘What kind of bhikṣu can receive offerings?’ The Buddha said: ‘If one is counted among bhikṣus, cultivates the saṅgha’s work, and attains the saṅgha’s benefit, this person can receive offerings. The four fruits and four directions are the saṅgha’s count; the thirty-seven factors are the saṅgha’s work; the four fruits are the saṅgha’s benefit.’ The bhikṣu again said to the Buddha: ‘If one arousing the mind of the Mahāyāna, how is it then?’ The Buddha said: ‘If one arousing the mind of the Mahāyāna seeks sarvajñā, not falling into the count, not cultivating the work, and not attaining the benefit, he can receive offerings.’ The bhikṣu asked in astonishment: ‘How can this person receive offerings?’ The Buddha said: ‘Even if this person receives robes to spread across the great earth, and receives almsfood like Mount Sumeru, he can completely repay the donor's kindness.’ One should know that the ultimate fruit of the Hīnayāna does not equal the very beginning of the Mahāyāna.
