Answer: As in the Treatise’s scorched wick [analogy], it is not the beginning yet not apart from the beginning; it is not the end yet not apart from the end. If one is complete in wisdom and faith, upon hearing that a single thought-moment is identical, it is correct. Because of faith one does not slander, and because of wisdom one is not afraid; both beginning and end are correct. If one lacks faith, one exalts the noble realm too highly, taking it as not within one's own share of wisdom; if one lacks wisdom, one gives rise to overweening pride, claiming oneself to be equal to the Buddha; then both beginning and end are wrong. For this reason, one must know the six identities, namely: identity in principle, identity in verbal expression, identity in contemplative practice, identity in resemblance, identity in partial reality, and identity in the ultimate. These six identities begin in the ordinary and end in the noble. Beginning in the ordinary, they eliminate doubt and timidity; ending in the noble, they eliminate arrogance and self-aggrandizement (and so forth).
