‘Identity in principle’ means that a single thought-moment of the mind is the principle of the tathāgatagarbha itself. Being ‘thus’ (tathā), it is identical to emptiness; being ‘garbha’ (storehouse), it is identical to the provisional; being ‘principle’, it is identical to the middle; the three wisdoms are complete within a single thought-moment of the mind, inconceivable. As stated above, ‘the three truths are one truth, neither three nor one’; a single color, a single fragrance, all phenomena, and all minds are also like this. This is named ‘identity in principle being the aspiration for bodhi’, and is also ‘identity in principle being calming and contemplation’. Being identical to quiescence is named ‘calming’; being identical to illumination is named ‘contemplation’.
