‘Identity in verbal expression’ means: although principle is immediately so, one uses it daily without knowing, because having not yet heard of the three truths, one completely fails to recognize the Buddha Dharma, like the eyes of oxen and sheep, not understanding directions. Either from spiritual friends or from sūtra scrolls, one hears the one real bodhi explained above, and within names and words thoroughly penetrates and understands it, knowing that all phenomena are the Buddha Dharma. This is ‘bodhi in verbal expression’, and is also ‘calming and contemplation in verbal expression’. Before having heard it, one runs and seeks everywhere; once having heard it, the mind of climbing and seeking ceases, which is named ‘calming’; merely having faith in dharmatā and not having faith in other things is named ‘contemplation’.
