The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "First sitting beneath the tree of the Buddha, by his power he subdued the Māras, attained the deathless extinction, and awakened to the path. He turned the wheel of the Dharma three times in the great chiliocosm; that wheel is originally ever-pure. Gods and humans attaining the path attest to this; the Three Jewels thereby appeared in the world." This is the beginning of the gradual teaching. It also says: "The Buddha expounds the Dharma with a single sound, and sentient beings each attain understanding according to their kind: some are terrified and some rejoice, some give rise to aversion and renunciation and some sever doubt. This is the supernatural power and unshared quality [of the Buddha]." This attests to the indeterminate teaching. It also says: "He expounds the Dharma as neither existent nor non-existent; through causes and conditions all phenomena arise. There is no self, no maker, and no receiver of retribution, yet wholesome and unwholesome karma do not perish." This attests to the sudden teaching.
