摩訶止觀 1.23

1.23

《法華》云：「如是之人應以此法漸入佛慧。」此證漸也。又云：「若不信此法，於餘深法中示教利喜。」此證不定也。又云：「正直捨方便，但說無上道。」此證頓也。

The Lotus Sutra says: "Persons such as these should be led gradually into the Buddha's wisdom through this Dharma." This attests to the gradual. It also says: "If they do not believe this Dharma, then among other profound Dharmas one demonstrates it, instructs them, and brings them benefit and joy." This attests to the indeterminate. It also says: "Directly discarding expedient means, one expounds only the unsurpassed path." This attests to the sudden.
