"Giving rise to the aspiration by investigating the principle": the dharmatā is naturally so from Heaven; accumulation cannot defile it, suffering cannot distress it, the path cannot penetrate it, cessation cannot purify it. It is like clouds cloaking the moon, yet unable to harm it; only after casting off the defilements does one see the dharmatā. A sūtra states: "Cessation is not the true truth; through cessation one tallies with the true." If even cessation is not the true, how could the [other] three truths be so? Within defilement there is no bodhi; within bodhi there is no defilement. This is called "giving rise to the bodhicitta by investigating the four truths of arising and perishing to seek the Buddha path above and transform sentient beings below."
