Next, the differences in the Vedas: if they are the books for regulating the household and saving the world manifested and read by outer tīrthikas, their fascicles are not the same and their explanations differ. Those who manifest and read much have broad knowledge; those who do so little have narrow knowledge. The growth of pride and arrogance is entirely due to differences in texts. If those of internal wrong views do not manifest or read the texts of outer tīrthikas, their knowledge is narrow; if they manifest and read them, their knowledge is broad. If they do not manifest or read the texts of the Tripiṭaka, they do not know the names and characteristics within the realms [of samsara], and their knowledge and views are narrow; if they manifest and read them, their knowledge is broad. If they do not manifest or read the Mahāyāna, they do not know the names and characteristics beyond the realms, and their knowledge is narrow; if they manifest and read them, their knowledge is broad. One should know that the dharma of the Vedas differs sentence by sentence.
