Furthermore, although the four gates are correct Dharma, if one clings to these four gates with an attached mind, wrong views will then arise; seeing the four gates as different, one will raise much disputation when cultivating the cause. For example, if someone stays long at a city gate, distinguishing tiles and timber, assessing whether they are crude or fine, asserting that the south is right and the north is wrong, or the east is skillful and the west is clumsy, lingering by his own doing and unwilling to advance, this is not the fault of the gate. Those who are attached are also like this: distinguishing names and characteristics, extensively knowing defilements, frequently reciting the limbs of the path, seeking fame and gathering followers, touting and peddling themselves to pursue attainment. They beat the drum of conceit and raise the banner of pride, boasting to others and mutually falling into disputation, grasping each other's heads and pulling each other's hair. The eighty-eight proclivities, along with anger and craving, surge forth immensely, all because an attached mind gives rise to wrong views with respect to the gates of correct Dharma. The defilements they give rise to are no different from those of external tīrthikas; yet regarding the doctrines they maintain, the difference is like that between heaven and earth. The Vaipulya says: "To ask diverse questions about the bridge is reproved by the wise." People are also like this: for the sake of studying the path, they cultivate these four gates, yet for over thirty years they distinguish a single gate without having understood it clearly. As soon as their effort is applied, they are already old, lacking the three kinds of flavors. They are born in vain and die in vain, squandering a lifetime for nothing. Like that person asking about the bridge, what benefit is there? This is because an attached mind attaches to unattached Dharma and gives rise to wrong views.
