As for the four gates of the Tripiṭaka, they are world-transcending dharmas attained by world-transcending noble ones; their substance is pure, being the place where afflictions are extinguished. Not only are the Buddha's sūtras the correct Dharma, but what the five hundred [arhats] expounded can also attain the Way. The Miaoshengding jing states: 'One hundred years after the Buddha's passing, one hundred thousand people left household life and ninety thousand attained the Way; at two hundred years, one hundred thousand left household life and ten thousand attained the Way.' One should know that with a non-clinging mind, one does not cling to non-clinging dharmas, generating a mind that is upright and correct, awakening to impermanence. Arising and ceasing thought-moment by thought-moment, not guaranteed from morning to evening, one aspires to seek the essential escape, not barricading the gates to produce defilement and generate conceptual proliferation. For example, if a person wishes to quickly see the king to receive gifts and be appointed to office, entering through the four gates, what leisure would they have to linger and argue over good and bad? Knowing that the gates are thoroughfares, they need not dispute; just as medicine is for curing disease, one should not discriminate. Quickly escaping the burning house and exhausting the limits of all suffering, when true illumination arises they realize the ultimate Way, being completely without dispute. Being without dispute, there is no karma; without karma, there is no birth and death; there are only the path and cessation. The ground of the mind is tranquil and open, causes and results are both absent, conflicts and disputes are all extinguished; there is only correct view, and no perverse views.
