North of the Huai River, there are practitioners of Mahāyāna emptiness who handle snakes without restraint; I shall now explain them. Their earlier master practiced contemplation upon wholesome dharmas, but failed to penetrate for a long time; when he let his mind go toward evil dharmas to practice contemplation, he obtained a little concentrated mind and gave rise to a shallow understanding of emptiness. Failing to recognize faculties and conditions, and failing to comprehend the Buddha's intent, he taught this method exclusively to others. Having taught others for a long time, he occasionally met one or two who benefited, like an insect eating wood accidentally forming characters; he immediately took this as proof, calling it true reality and others' [teachings] false speech. Ridiculing those who keep precepts and cultivate the good, he said this was not the Way. He taught everyone exclusively to commit all kinds of evil everywhere. The blind, having no eyes, could not distinguish right from wrong; their spiritual faculties being dull and their afflictions heavy, upon hearing what he said, which accorded with their lustful inclinations, they all believed, submitted, and followed along. Abandoning the prohibitive precepts, there was no wrongdoing they did not commit, and their sins piled up like mountain peaks. Consequently, the common people came to disregard [the Dharma] like weeds, and kings and ministers thereupon destroyed the Buddha-dharma, the venomous influence penetrating deeply and remaining unchanged to this day.
