The Shiji states: "At the close of the Zhou dynasty, there were those who disheveled their hair and bared their bodies without observing ritual propriety; thereupon the Quanrong invaded the state, [whose existence hung] uninterrupted like a silk thread, and the Ji clan of Zhou gradually perished." Furthermore, Ruan Ji had untamed talent, with unkempt hair and loose belt, and the descendants of high ministers later all imitated him. Only those who insulted each other like slaves and dogs were considered to have attained naturalness; those who exercised restraint, respect, and caution were called rustics—this was the omen of the downfall of the Sima clan. The persecution by Yuwen Yong was also due to the demonic deeds of Yuan Song. These are omens of the destruction of the Buddha-dharma and also omens of their eras; what do they have to do with the intention of 'following one's own mind'?
