Part Two: Exhorting to practice the four kinds of samādhi to enter the bodhisattva stages. As for expounding this calming and contemplation: one who wishes to ascend to the wondrous stage cannot ascend without practice; if one is skilled in churning, the clarified butter (sarpirmaṇḍa) can be obtained. The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Again I see Buddha-sons cultivating various practices to seek the Buddha path.' The methods of practice are numerous, but summarily speaking there are four: first, constantly sitting; second, constantly walking; third, half-walking and half-sitting; fourth, neither walking nor sitting. That they are all called 'samādhi' means attuned, straight, and concentrated. The Great Treatise says: 'When a wholesome mind dwells unmoving in one place, this is called samādhi.' The dharmadhātu is the one place; correct contemplation can abide in it unmoved. The four practices serve as conditions, and through these conditions the contemplating mind is attuned and made straight; hence it is called samādhi.
