Next is contemplation of the hindrance of anger. If a person has much anger, sullen and furious, constantly arising in continuity, unable to be severed and unable to be subdued, one should let it arise as it will and illuminate it with calming and contemplation. Contemplate the four phases: from where does anger arise? If one cannot find its arising, nor its ceasing, and applies this through the twelve matters: from whom does anger arise? Who is the one who is angry? Who is the object of anger? When contemplating in this way, one does not find anger; its footprints of coming and going and its characteristics are empty and calm. Contemplate the ten dharmadhātus of anger and the four virtues of anger, as explained above (and so forth). This is penetrating the Buddha-way through the non-way of anger. Contemplation of the hindrances of violating precepts, indolence and distraction, wrong views and ignorance, as well as all other evil matters, is also like this.
