2.98

觀此無記，與善惡異耶？同耶？同則非無記。異者，為記滅，無記生？記不滅，無記生？記亦滅亦不滅，無記生？記非滅非不滅，無記生？求記不可得，何況無記與記同異耶？非同故不合；非異故不散。非合故不生；非散故不滅。

Contemplate this indeterminate: is it different from wholesome and unwholesome, or the same? If the same, it would not be indeterminate. If different: does the indeterminate arise when the determinate ceases? Does the indeterminate arise when the determinate does not cease? Does the indeterminate arise when the determinate both ceases and does not cease? Does the indeterminate arise when the determinate neither ceases nor does not cease? Seeking the determinate is unattainable, how much more so whether the indeterminate and the determinate are identical or different? Because they are not identical, they do not unite; because they are not different, they do not disperse. Because they do not unite, they do not arise; because they do not disperse, they do not cease.
