The Tripiṭaka is an expedient teaching; it only clarifies two truths. In the initial stage of mind, the bodhisattva's mind focuses on the ultimate, subduing the four entanglements so that the fat of defilements melts away; for three asaṃkhyeyas he cultivates the practices of the six pāramitās, making the body of merit plump; for a hundred kalpas he plants the major and minor marks, acquires the five supernormal knowledges, obtains the Dharma-eye, illuminates the conventional truth, distinguishes faculties and natures, matures sentient beings, and performs Buddha-work. In the final stage of mind, he sits at the bodhimaṇḍa, and in thirty-four thought-moments cuts off the delusions of view and thought completely. These thirty-four thought-moments are the eight patiences, eight knowledges, nine unobstructed paths, and nine liberations, which together make thirty-four thought-moments. Furthermore, a sutra states: 'In a single thought-moment there are six hundred arisings and cessations.' The masters of the Tattvasiddhi say: 'A single thought-moment has sixty kṣaṇas.' In just this single thought-moment, entering emptiness from the provisional, he obtains the wisdom-eye, illuminates the ultimate truth, and attains Buddhahood. Having previously illuminated the conventional, he then also illuminates the ultimate; illuminating both truths simultaneously, he differs from the disciples. Bodhisattvas only illuminate the conventional and do not illuminate the ultimate; the two vehicles only illuminate the ultimate and do not illuminate the conventional; the Buddha can encompass both, and additionally possesses the ultimate truth of the middle way.
