Next, people of the three vehicles together sever defilements by means of the ineffable path. In discussing the separation and combination of the truths: the conventional truth is shared, but the ultimate truth differs. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'Emptiness has two kinds: first, mere emptiness; second, not-mere-emptiness.' The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra states: 'People of the two vehicles only see emptiness, but do not see non-emptiness. The wise do not merely see emptiness, but can also see non-emptiness; non-emptiness is the great nirvāṇa.' The two vehicles have only mere emptiness, their wisdom like a firefly; bodhisattvas have wisdom like the sun. Since the emptiness is different and the wisdom is distinct, there are two separate truths, which are now combined into one ultimate truth.
