How do supramundane designations and teachings all arise from the mind? Sthiramati's *Ratnagotravibhāga* states: 'There is a great sūtra scroll as vast as the trichiliocosm, recording the affairs of the trichiliocosm. Things as vast as medium, small, the four continents, or the three realms have their affairs recorded within a single dust mote. As it is with one dust mote, so it is with all dust motes. A person appears in the world and, with the pure divine eye, sees this great sūtra scroll and thinks: "Why is this great sūtra inside a dust mote without benefiting all sentient beings?" He then uses expedients to break it open and bring forth this sūtra to benefit others.' The Tathāgata's unhindered wisdom sūtra scroll is fully present within the bodies of sentient beings; inversions conceal it, so they neither believe nor see it. The Buddha teaches sentient beings to cultivate the eightfold noble path, shatter all falsehood, and see that their own wisdom is equal to that of the Tathāgata. This draws upon a dust mote to provide a simile based on existence.
