Cultivation is of many kinds. If one contemplates the mind as arising and perishing through conditioned co-arising and impermanent, and cultivates the eightfold noble path, this is to inscribe the sutras of the Tripiṭaka. If one contemplates the mind's conditioned co-arising as identical to emptiness and cultivates the eightfold noble path, this is to inscribe the sutras of the shared teaching. If one contemplates the mind's discriminations and calculations as having immeasurable varieties, which ordinary persons and the two vehicles cannot fathom and only a bodhisattva with the Dharma-eye can see, this is cultivating the immeasurable eightfold noble path, which is to inscribe the sutras of the distinctive teaching. If one contemplates the mind as identical to the Buddha-nature and cultivates the eightfold noble path in a perfect manner, this is to inscribe the sutras of the middle way. It clarifies that all dharmas emerge from within the mind; the mind is itself the Mahāyāna, the mind is itself the Buddha-nature, and one sees for oneself that one's own wisdom is equal to that of the Tathāgatas.
