Regarding this, there are five [topics]: first, clarifying Hinayāna and Mahāyāna; second, clarifying the half and the full; third, clarifying the biased and the perfect; fourth, clarifying the gradual and the sudden; fifth, clarifying the provisional and the real. The ultimate principle is neither large nor small, and so on up to neither provisional nor real. Large and small, provisional and real, are all ineffable. Given conditions, large, small, and so on can all be expounded. Through the power of small expedient means, he expounded the Hinayāna for the five monks; through the power of great expedient means, he expounded the Mahāyāna for the bodhisattvas. Although both large and small are expedient means, one must understand their rationale; therefore we use five pairs of distinctions so that there is no confusion.
