The 'small' is the Hīnayāna. Its power of wisdom is weak, capable only of cultivating the calming and contemplation that analyzes dharmas, analyzing form and mind. As the Treatise explains in its exposition of dānapāramitā, refuting the tīrthikas' adjacent infinitesimals: 'Is this dust-mote existent or non-existent? If there are infinitesimal forms, then there are directional divisions in the ten directions; if there are no infinitesimal forms, then there are no directional divisions in the ten directions.' If the analysis of infinitesimal forms is not exhaustive, one falls into the view of permanence and the view of existence; if the analysis of infinitesimals is exhaustive, one falls into the view of annihilation and the view of non-existence. This is the tīrthikas' analysis of form. The analysis of mind is also like this: if one posits the existence or non-existence of mind, both fall into annihilation and permanence. These are all the tīrthikas' analyses of form and mind.
