Chapter Thirty-Two says: "Sentient beings are like milk mixed with blood; srotaāpannas and sakṛdāgāmins are like pure milk; anāgāmins are like curd; arhats are like fresh butter; pratyekabuddhas and bodhisattvas are like clarified butter; Buddhas are like ghee." Does this analogy not explain the five flavors in the shared teaching? Pratyekabuddhas erode habit-energies, being slightly superior to śrāvakas; therefore they are clarified butter together with bodhisattvas. The Buddha having exhausted both primary [defilements] and habit-energies is termed ghee. Borrowing this to analogize the shared teaching within its own division, the meaning of gradual and perfect becomes evident.
