The deluded obscurations of ordinary sentiment are also like this. Not knowing the three truths, [the Buddha] distinguishes them as great compassionate skillful means: either explaining the three truths with respect to the gate of existence, like the blind hearing of the seashell; or explaining the three truths with respect to the gate of emptiness, like the blind hearing of flour; or formulating the gate of emptiness and existence to explain the three truths, like the blind hearing of snow; or formulating the gate of neither emptiness nor existence to explain the three truths, like the blind hearing of the crane. Although they hear these explanations, they have not yet reached the principle of the truths. These ordinary beings can never see the true characteristics of permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Although they have not yet attained this sight, each clings to emptiness or existence, mutually affirming and denying one another.
