When the hindrance of sensual desire arises, one recalls past experiences of the five desires: recollecting pure and clean forms confronting the eyes; remembering pleasing sounds faintly echoing in the ears; thinking of delightful fragrances opening the gates of the defilements; imagining delicious flavors with sweet saliva watering the mouth; remembering tactile sensations that made the hairs stand on end and caused trembling. Greedily desiring such coarse and wretched five desires, one reflects and calculates, intoxication and delusion arise in the mind, and one forgets right mindfulness; or one secretly devises expedients, hoping to obtain them again. If one has never obtained them, one also searches them out or seeks after them; the mind enters the sensory realms without an interval of thought. Coarse sensations hinder dhyāna; how could dhyāna be attained? This is the characteristic of the hindrance of sensual desire.
