Second, concerning the adequacy of clothing and food: clothing covers the body to conceal ugliness; food sustains life to fill the wound of hunger. When the body is at peace, the Path flourishes, and when the Path flourishes, the foundation is established. Physical life and the Path depend on this clothing and food. Thus [the scripture] says: 'Having eaten, the Tathāgata attained anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi.' Although this is a minor condition, it can accomplish the great matter. Naked and starving, without peace, where could the dharmas of the Path reside? Therefore, clothing and food must be adequate.
