When employing these ten repentances, one profoundly contemplates the three truths. In addition, one applies ritual practice with a deeply earnest mind, not sparing bodily life; this is called the 'second stalwart person.' These are called the two repentances of phenomena and principle. Sins that obstruct the Path are extinguished, morality is purified, samādhi becomes manifest, and calming and contemplation are developed. Because the morality of phenomena is purified, fundamental samādhi becomes manifest, and worldly knowledge and the knowledge of others' minds develop. Because the morality of non-arising is purified, the samādhi of the true truth becomes manifest, and the knowledge of all phenomena (sarvajñatā) develops. Because the morality identical to the provisional is purified, the samādhi of the conventional truth becomes manifest, and the knowledge of the aspects of the Path develops. Because the morality identical to the middle is purified, the king of samādhis becomes manifest, and the knowledge of all modes (sarvākārajñatā) develops. Having obtained the samādhi of these three truths, it is called the 'king of samādhis,' for all samādhis completely enter into it. Furthermore, it is able to produce all concentrations, lacking none; therefore it is called 'calming.' Furthermore, it is fully endowed with all kinds of wisdom; therefore it is called 'contemplation.' Hence we know that pure observance of the precepts and earnest repentance are both the preliminary conditions for calming and contemplation; such is the intent here.
