Regarding contemplative practice as clothing, the Great Sutra says: 'Although you monks wear kāṣāyas, your minds are not yet dyed with the Dharma robes of the Mahāyāna.' As the Lotus [Sutra] says: 'Wearing the Tathāgata's robes. The Tathāgata's robes are a gentle, forbearing mind.' This is the patience of quiescent extinction. The two extremes of birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are coarse and harsh; being non-dual and not different from the principle of the middle way, it is called 'gentle.' Settling the mind in the middle way is called 'forbearance.' Being free from the two kinds of clamor is called 'quiescent'; surpassing the two kinds of death is called 'extinction.' The mind of quiescent-extinction patience covers the evil of the two extremes, so it is called 'clothing that conceals ugliness.' Because it eliminates the five entrenchments, it is called 'warding off heat.' Shattering the views of ignorance is called 'fending off cold.' Free from the agitation of birth-and-death and free from the distraction of emptiness, abandoning the two kinds of vitarka and vicāra, it is called 'repelling mosquitoes and flies.' This patience is endowed with all phenomena. Just as a mirror possesses images while tiles and rubble do not appear [as mirrors], the middle contains all characteristics, whereas mere emptiness lacks them. Thus it is said: 'Deeply penetrating the marks of sin and merit, illuminating everywhere the ten directions; the subtle and wondrous pure dharmakāya is endowed with the thirty-two marks to adorn the dharmakāya.' A single contemplation of quiescent patience is fully endowed with myriad virtues; it is also called 'clothing' and also called 'ornamentation'; it is not formed by the cutting and sewing of nine, seven, or five strips.
