The three robes are the three contemplations. They conceal the ugliness upon the three truths; they fend off the cold and heat of views and cravings upon the three truths; they repel the mosquitoes and flies of the three thoughts and adorn the three bodies. Therefore, taking the three contemplations as clothing is just the patience of suppression, the patience of compliance, and the patience of the quiescent extinction of non-arising. Furthermore, giving rise to views is called 'cold,' and giving rise to craving is called 'heat.' Practicing calming and contemplation to attain the understanding of seeing the truths is like warmth, so views do not arise; attaining the understanding of reflection is like coolness, so craving does not arise. When the five sense faculties are free from evil, that is the adornment of merit; when the mental ground is free from evil, that is the adornment of wisdom. The robes upon the remaining two contemplations can be understood by analogy.
