Second, in an araṇya, shaking off defilements through dhūta, where the sounds of pasturing animals are cut off; this is a place to cultivate the Path. One sustains oneself through piṇḍapāta. The seven Buddhas have all clarified the method of begging for food. The Vaipulya, Pratyutpanna, and Lotus [Sutras] all speak of begging for food. If the route is far, begging for food brings toil and hindrance; if it is near, people and activities create noisy distraction. Neither far nor near, begging for food is convenient and easy; these are intermediate persons.
