“Ah, good man! Throughout immeasurable kalpas you have drunk the poison of wild distraction, chasing after the five sense-objects and rising and sinking in the three realms. It is just like tūla cotton blown by a fierce wind, or beans rising and sinking boiled in a cauldron of boiling heat. From suffering you go to affliction, and from affliction to suffering. Why not quiet the mind to reach the root and make your thought one? If the thought is one, what matter cannot be accomplished? If suffering and origination attain oneness, there is no more samsāra; if avidyā attains oneness, it does not proceed to saṅkhāras, and so forth up to old age and death. Breaking down the great tree, you exhaust the old and do not create the new. If the six obscurations attain oneness, you cross to the other shore; only this is joyous!” With skillful means, various causes and conditions, and various parables, one extensively praises calming, causing his sentiments to rejoice. This is called “calming the mind by pacifying it in accordance with inclination.”
