“Furthermore, good man! Just as when heaven suffers extreme drought, rivers and ponds all dry up, all vegetation is parched and withered, and the hundred grains fall away; but when the Dragon King Sāgara gathers clouds for seven days and pours down rain from the four quarters, the great earth is soaked, all seeds sprout, all rootstocks develop, all branches and leaves grow lush and dense, and all flowers and fruits bloom and flourish. Human beings are also like this: due to distraction and indolence, the good that should arise does not arise again, and the good that has already arisen falls away. The river of dhyāna dries up, the tree of the factors of awakening withers, all goodness is parched, the hundred merits are stunted and exhausted, and the cause-flower and the path-fruit no longer mature. If you can unify your thought in a secluded forest, neither letting the internal go out nor the external enter, the cloud of tranquility will arise. To produce the various dhyānas is precisely the falling of rain; the thicket of virtues, the skillful means of warmth and summit, vision, knowledge, clarity, and awakening, the patience of faith, the patience of conformity, non-arising, and quiescence, up to unexcelled bodhi, will all be attained.” With skillful means and various causes and parables, one extensively praises calming, generating his roots of goodness. This is called “calming the mind by pacifying it in accordance with suitability.”
