If he says, “When I contemplate the characteristics of phenomena, distraction and torpor are not eliminated,” one should explain to him that calming has great function: “Calming is a wall-like concentration that the eight winds and evil thoughts cannot penetrate. Calming is pure water that cleanses lust and the eight inversions; it is like morning dew that evaporates upon seeing the sun. Calming is great loving-kindness that pities both foes and friends alike and can shatter wrath. Calming is a great vidyādhāraṇī that dispels both folly and doubt. Calming is itself the Buddha, shattering obstructions to the Path, like an agada medicine that comprehensively cures all, like a wondrous physician reciting mantras over the withered to raise the dead.” With skillful means and various causes and parables, causing him to shatter evil, this is called “calming the mind by pacifying it in accordance with antidote.”
