Furthermore, faith and Dharma do not stand in isolation; hearing and reflection must assist each other. For example, when a practitioner of Dharma hears a single phrase—'the essence is quiescent and pure, dreams and delusions are all dispelled'—they return to sit and reflect, and joy arises in their mind. Again, having heard about calming, they return to reflect further, and dhyāna-concentration arises. Again, hearing about calming, they immediately return to reflect, and deluded thoughts are all broken. Again, having heard about calming, they return to reflect further, and brightly they are about to awaken. Again, having heard about contemplation, they return to reflect further, and great joy arises in their mind. Again, having heard about contemplation, they return to reflect further; the arising of good, breaking of evil, approaching awakening, and so on are to be known by analogy with the preceding. This, being listening little and reflecting much, is called a 'practitioner of Dharma'; it does not mean they do not listen to the Dharma at all.
